On behalf of the College Park PTSA, I want to welcome you all to another exciting school year. As your PTSA President, I look forward to meeting and working with parents, teachers, students, and administrators to ensure a successful year for our entire Falcon community. The PTSA is extremely proud of the resources it provides to students and staff. Last year, the PTSA gave more than $13,000 to our school programs and departments. These resources benefit all of our children and it would not be possible without your financial support.

Our largest (and only) fundraiser of the year is the $100 family donation we ask for at the beginning of each school year. With your help, we can continue to provide funding for academic and elective sections in science, math, English, history, fine arts, technology, and so much more. Click on the link at https://collegeparkptsa.revtrak.net/ or visit the Webstores page of our website to make a donation. Working together, we can make it happen for the 2,000+ students at our school. We invite you to attend our PTSA meetings and to get involved in the myriad of Booster organizations that support our programs. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully,
Cindy Turner

ONLINE DATA CONFIRMATION  ** NEW THIS YEAR TO COLLEGE PARK**

Online Data Confirmation is a feature of Aeries that allows parents to confirm and update student demographics, contacts, medical conditions, and authorization information through their HomeLink Parent Portal account.  This process handles the normal “Summer Re-Registration” of students where parents are normally required to fill out fresh emergency cards, sign various documents, and establish authorizations.

When parents log into the Aeries Parent Portal, Data Confirmation will display in the Student Info Tab dropdown.

A Yellow message will also display to the parent on their home page if they have not completed the data confirmation process.

If you do not have access to a Parent Portal account, please contact Stacy Boschetti in Attendance @ (925) 682-7670, ext. 3213 or via email at boschettis@mdusd.org to get your verification codes. Attendance will open on August 1st.

FAILURE TO COMPLETE THIS PROCESS WILL RESULT IN YOUR STUDENT NOT RECEIVING THEIR CLASS SCHEDULE.

Seniors: If you have not completed your senior transcript request/senior survey with Mrs. Welsh please go see her any brunch or lunch time to get it done.

It is crucial that you do this because all colleges require your final transcript. If you neglect to send one they can rescind your offer of a place (and you won't even get your deposits back!)

Prior experience and knowledge of the game is great, but not required. Parents and students are invited to meet our coaches, team parents, and returning players on the pool deck at College Park on Thurs., June 1 at 7:00pm. (The pool is located at the back right-hand side of the campus.)

College Park High School has teamed up with Future Ford Lincoln of Concord. They are helping us with a fundraising event to raise money for the school. Stop by and test drive one of their new standard Ford vehicles or a new standard Lincoln vehicle with absolutely no obligation to buy.

For each test drive taken by a participant, $20.00 will be donated to College Park High School (up to a total of $3,000). Future Ford Lincoln of Concord will be supplying brand new Ford Cars to drive; it'll only take 150 test drives to earn $3,000! It's that simple: test drive a car and the school will get paid $20.00! There is no catch!

There is absolutely no obligation on your part, other than to test drive a new car! Who doesn't like to test drive cars? So tell all your friends and family to stop by Future Ford Lincoln of Concord; we look forward to seeing you!

There are two different days to participate:

As we all know life brings change.  This holds true with our coaching staff.  Long time basketball coach Troy Faulk announced today that he will be stepping down effective immediately.  Coach Faulk shared with the team today at lunch his difficult decision, saying goodbye to a program he has been dedicated to for nine years.  He has always expected his student-athletes to be all in, and has the same expectation for himself.  His new job and family commitments have led him to take some time away from the team and the sport he loves.

Coach Faulk has coached at College Park since2008, serving as a varsity assistant.  He was on staff for three DVAL championships, and the Nor Cal /State Finals run in 2013.  In 2015 Coach Faulk took over the head job, leading to team to a DVAL championship season, NCS birth and posting a 22-7 record.  During Coach Faulk’s three years as the head coach, they posted a 49-33 overall record, won two DVAL championships, and advanced to NCS each season.

One of Coach Faulk’s key contributions during his tenure has been the College Park team room in the small gym.  The space has lockers, record boards, team benches, and a flat screen tv for the team to take advantage of.  This room is not only used by the basketball programs but our volleyball teams as well.  Troy made it a priority to push this project to completion with paperwork and fundraising.

Coach Faulk’s lasting contribution will always be the young men he has mentored during his time here at CP.  He as always asked his players for their best and they have responded in kind.  His professionalism, attention to detail, and passion for the game will be missed.  There were handshakes and a more than a few teary eyes today when Troy spoke to the team.

Thank you Coach Faulk for your dedication and service here at College Park.  You will be missed.

We would at the same time like to welcome our new girls’ volleyball coach, Melissa Ralls.  Coach Ralls played for two years at Merced College as a Libero.  She brings seven years of coaching experience to College Park, having coached at the Middle School, High School and club levels.  Coach Ralls currently coaches at Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy in the offseason.  She has met with the team and will be announcing her staff and plans for team workouts shortly.  Coach Ralls fills the position previously held by Kent Perkins who stepped down for family and health reasons.

Steve Nixon Memorial Scholarship

Steve Nixon was a teacher and then a Vice Principal at College Park for over 20 years. Steve embodied fairness, personal improvement, higher education and was a team player. Steve would work with us to make good things happen for the students and staff of College Park. He wanted to get to know people so that he could work with their strengths. Steve considered each person an individual and students a work-in progress.  He would never give up on any student, and would help them become the best possible individual. Steve truly believed that students and their successes were why we came to work each day. Steve cared about students, parents, and staff, then pushed each to excel and was supportive in each of our situations. He was also known for giving compliments at just the right moment, which showed just how much he cared. He made a difference in so many students’ lives.

Selection Criteria will be based on an essay application.

To apply: Write a short essay on one or more of the following:

  • How have you shown resiliency and perseverance in your life?
  • What have you done to improve College Park?

If you are the parent of a student that will be attending College Park High School next year, the CPHS PTSA needs YOU!!!

We desperately need someone to fill the President of the PTSA position. We also need to fill the position of Auditor on next year's PTSA Executive Board.

In addition to that we need a Volunteer Coordinator, a person to run All In One Day, someone to be in charge of the organic gardens, and an Academic Boosters chair.

If you'd like to do our community the honor of serving in one of these positions or know of a CPHS parent (or guardian) who would like to do so, please contact Cris Tina Spillett.  Please help us keep the PTSA strong so we can support our school with the extras that make CPHS a wonderful school community

Dear College Park Community,

I would like to commend you, our families, as we continue to have the best students in the district!  Each and every day I am in awe of the quality of our student body, and I am sure this is what our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) visiting committee will see as well.

As a reminder, our WASC visit will be March 26-29. We have submitted our self-study to the WASC Commission and have received positive initial feedback from our WASC Chairperson.  This is a fluid document--after the visiting committee has completed their visit, we will have an opportunity to revise our action plan to reflect our strategy to address their feedback and recommendations.

There is absolutely no reason to think or feel that we will not be continuing as a fully accredited high school.  I thank you for your continued support and if you should have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Best Regards,

Joe Alvarez
Principal

The Grad Nite committee is looking for a volunteer who is able to help the Food Chair for this year's Grad Nite. An underclass parent (or two!)  is needed to help make this event successful.  This individual will need to be present while the Food Chair is at the graduation ceremony so it should not be a senior parent.

Ideally, this individual would take over the Food Chair position for next year's Grad Nite. If you are interested in helping out, would like to learn more about the position or know of someone who would be interested, please contact Jennifer Tipton at jtip76@gmail.com. The math teachers have developed stations at which students will calculate area, circumference, slope, estimate volume and calculate geometric probability. Some corrections from Junior Parent Night:
  • The ACT/SAT dates on the hand out are from 2015-16. This year's ACT dates are April 8 and June 10. This year's SAT dates are March 11, May 6 and June 3.
  • Mrs. Welsh was having a senior moment when she said there was no German SAT subject test. She has known about the German subject test for at least 15 years and why the response "No" popped out of her mouth is an embarrassing mystery for which she sincerely apologizes!

We're sending you this message on behalf of the College Park High School Athletic Boosters Crab Feed Committee. The annual Crab Feed/Auction will take place on Sat., Feb. 4 at the Pleasant Hill Community Center. We are in charge of the dessert auction for the event. Last year the Dessert Dash was a big success and a lot of fun!

We are reaching out to all the school's bakers and asking for dessert donations to be auctioned off. We aren't picky and will take anything you are willing to donate to us. We would like desserts to be delivered to the Pleasant Hill Community Center on the date of the event from 10:00am-1:00pm. If that's not possible, we can make other arrangements to pickup the dessert.

If you can help with a donation, please send us  an email at kjscharff@gmail.com and bridget_2399@yahoo.com and let us know what item you will be donating.

We would like to emphasis that we want all dessert presentations to look elegant and classy.

Thanks so much for your support!

Juniors! 2017 is your year of college apps and admission tests! It is extremely unwise to take the ACT or SAT without practicing. We will be holding a mock ACT and SAT test (you choose which one you want to practice) on Sat., Jan. 28.

This time we are using a new system: you will take the test and then immediately afterwards key in your answers via your phone or tablet (or a Career Center computer) to get an almost instantaneous score.

Mark your calendars now. Registration will be different from previous years. In order to have your scores marked you will need to set up an account with Princeton Review so you will be registering through them, NOT through the CPHS web store as before. The test will cost $15, which will be used to pay custodial fees for that Saturday. Any profit will go to the Career Center, not to Princeton Review. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch can take the test for free.

Click here to download a flyer with instructions for registering.

I wanted to let you know that we are changing locations for this year's commencement ceremony on June 6 from the Concord Pavilion to Diablo Valley College, due to the late scheduling of a concert at the Pavilion on the same day.  We are easily accommodated at DVC and it  may actually be more convenient for many families.  The relocation also enables us to keep traditional grad night activities on the same evening.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Joseph G. Alvarez

Principal

Thank you so much for the outpouring of donations that we received for this year's Holiday Outreach program. We were able to collect more than $7,000 to help our students in need. This is enough to fund our Outreach program for the 2016-2017 school year. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our College Park families and our wider community. Thank you!

If you'd like to hear more about College Park's Outreach program and how your donations help our students, please come to our next PTSA meeting on Tues., Jan. 10 at 7:00pm in the library. Our guest speaker will be Nathalie Keating, Student Resource Technician. Nathalie will share some stories about how College Park students are benefiting from the Outreach program donations. We hope to see you there!

Seniors should pay attention to these reminders:
  • If you applied to a 4-year school you must send your ACT/SAT scores officially. Self-reporting is not sufficient, you also need to send them from the test company.
  • If you applied to CSU you may well have to take a math and/or English placement test (ELM/EPT). Find out more about the tests, how you can be exempt, how to register, etc. at https://www.ets.org/csu/about.
  • Don't forget about applying for scholarships. The two biggest local scholarships (Assistance League and Rossmoor) are now in the Scholarship Binder in the Career Center. Check them out!
  • NO SENIORITIS!!  Please remember all college acceptances are PROVISIONAL. They are conditional on your passing all your college prep classes with at least a C and maintaining at least an overall 3.0. If you earn a D or an F in any class that counts for college (even if it is surplus to your a-g requirements) it could very well smash your dreams of attending a 4-year school straight out of high school. Hundreds of offers of admission are revoked every year--we don't want any of them to be for College Park students.
Juniors and Seniors
There will be a career talk by the US Marine Corps on Wed. Jan. 11 in the Career Center at 11:30am. Pick up a pass from the Career Center. You must get permission from your RTI teacher to attend.

There will be an information session with Yale University in the Career Center at 11:30 am on Thurs., Jan. 12. Pick up a pass from the Career Center. You must get permission from your RTI teacher to attend.

Juniors! Save Jan. 28 for mock ACT/SAT:

New waste stations will be popping up at College Park in January 2017. Each station will have a bin for garbage (destined for the landfill), recycling and composting.  State law AB1826 requires any business or school that produces 4 or more yards of organic waste (defined as yard and food waste) per week (that's us) to separate that out of the trash  so the material can be composted.  The Earth Club and Social Awareness Club are working with Republic Services (our garbage company) and the school administration to make it happen. Please help us turn our food waste into rich garden soil by checking out the posters that show what can be composted and by adding your food and food-contaminated organic waste to the compost collection bins.  Let's save our planet -- we're the ones who will be living in it.

Dear Parents,

We live in a world surrounded by technology. Whatever field our students choose to pursue as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of students are learning computer science, and fewer students are studying it than a decade ago.

That's why College Park is joining the largest learning event in history: Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 5-11). Last year, 15 million students tried computer science in one week. This year, we're proud to join the worldwide effort to reach 100 million students!

Our participation in Hour of Code is a statement that College Park is gearing up and preparing to teach these foundational 21st century skills to our students. We want to make our Hour of Code event a success.

To do so, I would like to encourage you to click here to learn more about the Hour of Code,  talk with your children about the online tutorials available to them at home and connect with teachers to learn what level of participation they are offering in their classrooms.

Not every classroom will participate this year. But we have begun. This is a chance to shift the future of education at College Park.

As our Hour of Code unfolds, we will post updates to our website. For now, please take a moment to watch this inspirational video and share it with your child.

CP will have two Hour of Code sessions on Wednesday December 7th in the library computer lab; one from 2:45-3:45pm and the second from 4:00-5:00pm.

Sincerely,

Joseph G. Alvarez

Each year the College Park PTSA organizes a "Holiday Outreach" program for College Park families in need of extra help. The College Park teachers and staff have identified about 50 students in need. Our plan is to provide each of these families with a $50 gift card to Target to assist in making their holidays special.

This means our goal is $2,500, but we have raised less than $1,000 so far! We need your help! Any donation amount will make a difference to these Falcon families. Last year we raised more than $4,000 thanks to the generosity of our College Park community.

To make a donation online:

  • Select this link for the PTSA webstore
  • Go to Donation, then select Outreach Program and make a donation of any amount

To make a donation by check:

  • Please make a check payable to College Park PTSA. Write "Holiday Outreach" on the memo line of your check
  • You or your child can drop it off in SSN, or
  • You can mail your check to: College Park PTSA/Holiday Outreach, 201 Viking Drive, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

All donations are tax deductible and are needed as soon as possible to be given out for the holiday season. (Donations received after Winter Break will support our year-round CP Outreach program helping students in need. Donations for this program are accepted year round.)

CPHS Instrumental Music Practice-a-thon is here!

What a great way to support our program while doing what our students do best! Until December 13 we are holding a Practice-a-thon to support our coaching program and travel.
Here's how it works:
  1. Starting Fri., Nov. 18 students ask friends and family to pledge per hour of practice or a flat donation. Pledges can be made via e-mail or with a pledge form.
  2. Nov. 30 through Dec. 13 - Students keep track of the hours they practice, then compute pledge totals at the end of the two weeks.
  3. Collect pledges and turn them in with pledge form and log by Fri., Dec. 15.

Donations can also be made online at http://mkt.com/cpimb.

There will be special prizes for the students that practice the most and raise the most funds and for the student in each class that raises the most money!  Practice time is any time that you are practicing a musical instrument including time that you spend in rehearsals.

An information sheetpractice logs and pledge forms were sent home with students and can be downloaded by clicking the links above.

Our program is growing and our coaching program has expanded.  Our professional coaches meet with students individually and in small groups to work on technique particular to their instruments. The Practice-a-thon will help us fund our coaching program through the Spring. Our goal is to raise $100 per student. Wind Ensemble and Concert Band students will be raising funds for the DC Performance Tour.

Double your recent donation

If you have recently made a donation to the music program (i.e., at Walk Through, at Showcase, etc.) and you or your spouse's company has a Matched Giving Program, please see if they will match your recent donation!

This is an important and easy way to raise extra funds for our program. Our Tax ID is 68-0485116, and we are known by the name Falcon Band Boosters of College Park. Questions? Please email cpimb.vp2@gmail.com.

News from the College & Career Center

Reminder for Seniors applying to out-of-state public or Common App schools

Out-of-state publics very often require you to send an official transcript. Mrs. Welsh is very happy to do that for you, but she cannot manage by intuition alone. You must give some indication that you have applied to that school. The best way is to log in to Family Connection, add the school(s) you are applying to under "Colleges I am Applying To," and check the transcript request box. Failing that, send her an email or drop by the Career Center.

Seniors who are applying to any school(s) using the Common Application should make an appointment for an interview with Mrs. Welsh

The interview should take place at least 2 weeks before the first Common Application is due, so schedule one now because time slots are filling up fast. Please visit the College & Career Center website and complete a brag sheet before you have your interview.

Colleges are starting to advertise their summer enrichment programs

There are all kinds of options from art to zoology. Many of them are very expensive but some have financial aid available. Drop by the Career Center to see what's available or search the internet. Places fill up fast so start thinking about it now

Our winter sports season is fast approaching.  In an effort to make our transition into the winter sports season as smooth as possible, we are having a Winter Sports Registration and Information meeting next Wednesday, October 26th in the Hurtado Gym from 6-7:30 pm.  All parents should attend to drop off or pick up important documents, receive informational packets, and hear from our Coaches, Athletic Director, Administration, and Athletic Booster Club.

Tryouts for all winter sports (basketball, soccer and wrestling), will begin Monday, November 7th.  I encourage all freshman and other students to consider participation on one of our winter teams.  Being a College Park student-athlete is a great way to make friends, stay focused, and learn valuable life skills while representing your school and community.  Continue the traditions of COURAGE, PRIDE, HONOR, and SARIFICE.  All student-athletes will need to complete an Athletic Clearance form and CIF Concussion form prior to the first day of practice.  These forms are available on our school website, may be picked up in the main office, from our AD, and available at our Registration Information Night.  Students will need a physical exam by their doctor to complete the Athletic Clearance form.

Students: if you feel sick, please come to the Attendance Office to call home. Do not text or call your parent from class.

If you come to the Attendance Office, Mrs. Boschetti can talk to your parent right away and get you released sooner. Using your cell phone to text or call your parents will delay your release time. Thank you.

Renaissance Feast.jpgThe CPHS choir department is putting on its beloved annual dinner fundraiser,

A Renaissance Holiday Feast, at 6:00pm on Fri., Nov. 11 and Sat., Nov. 12.The event is a historical reenactment of the lavish feasts and holiday revelry among the nobility in the European Renaissance.

The CPHS multi-use room is lovingly converted into a medieval castle--complete with drawbridge--and all student performers take on personae from 500 years ago. The evening is hosted by King Henry VIII and his queen Catherine of Aragon, featuring their royal party, knights in shining armor, wandering actors, a beggar or two, a bevy of tavern maidens, the stunning a cappella choral music of the Renaissance, and our very own jester. Guests eat a delicious five-course feast with their hands by candlelight.

Please come support the choir program, and create some lifelong memories! Dinner reservations for A Renaissance Holiday Feast are $50 adult, $25 student/staff, and $15 for children 10 and under. Premium private tables are available. For tickets and more info see the choir website: http://www.collegeparkchoirs.com.

Join a group of college admission professionals to take part in a mock admission discussion on Thurs., Oct. 27 at 6:00pm.

Who will you admit, deny, or wait list? What factors in the application are most powerful? Case Study events are an excellent way for seniors applying to UC or private schools to get a better idea of what makes a strong application and are the best possible way for juniors or younger students to understand the process and learn what they could be doing to make themselves stronger candidates by the time they reach senior year.

The evening will conclude with a mini college fair featuring the colleges taking part in the case study. The event is open to parents and students and all grades are welcome. More information about location and how to download the fake application materials will be available shortly. Participation will be limited, so have your student sign up in the College & Career Center ASAP.

Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artists division celebrates student artists with special needs. School PTAs then choose a selection of entries to be judged by local PTA units, which are then sent on to councils and then districts for consideration. The final artworks submitted to California State PTA by districts are then considered for Awards of Excellence or Awards of Merit. Award of Excellence entries then go on to represent California in the final National PTA judging round. You may refer to the California State PTA website for more information. Entry forms and guidelines are available by clicking here.

Entries will be due mid-late October. More information coming soon. Please contact Sharon Steele at 925-768-6242 orsteeleheads@astound.net with any questions.

"What Is Your Story?" That's the theme for the 2016-17 Reflections Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. This is an Art Contest put on by the California State PTA.

Reflections encourages students of all ages to:
  • Unleash creative talents and be inspired
  • Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
  • Experience the fun and joy of making art
  • Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
  • Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.
Participation is easy, exciting and empowering. All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:
  • Dance/choreography
  • Literature
  • Photography
  • Film production
  • Music composition
  • Visual arts
Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artists division celebrates student artists with special needs. There are major changes in financial aid this year. The system opens on Sat., Oct. 1 instead of Sun., Jan. 1 and federal and institutional aid will be based on prior prior year (PPY) instead of prior year. In other words, for students starting college in fall 2017 financial aid will be based on tax information from 2015.

There will be two identical Financial Aid Nights in the District this fall:
Wed. Sept. 21, 7:00-8:00pm at Northgate H.S.
Tues. Sept. 27, 6:30-7:30pm at Concord H.S.

The presentation will be provided by a staff member from the Office of Financial Aid at Saint Mary's College of California.
