Dear Parents,

The California School Climate, Health, and Learning Survey (CAL-SCHLS) System comprises three interrelated surveys developed for and supported by the California Department of Education: California Healthy Kids Survey, California School Staff Survey and California School Parent Survey.

These surveys provide schools and districts with critical information about the learning and teaching environment, the health and well-being of students, and supports for parents, school staff, and students that foster learning and school success. When used together, data from these three surveys help assess the needs, concerns, and successes of the whole school community – teachers, students, and parents – and allow schools and districts to compare perceptions about the status of these areas across stakeholder groups.

Please complete the parent survey with the link below:

Each year the College Park PTSA organizes a "Holiday Outreach" program for those College Park families in need of extra help. The College Park teachers and staff have identified about 50 students in need. Our plan is to provide each of these families with a $50 gift card to Target to assist in making their holidays special.

We have received less than $2,000 to date. Please remember that any donation amount will make a difference to these Falcon families.

To make a donation online:

  • Select this link for the PTSA webstore
  • Go to Donation, then select Outreach Program and make a donation of any amount

To make a donation by check:

  • Please make a check payable to College Park PTSA. Write "Holiday Outreach" on the memo line of your check
  • You or your child can drop it off in the main office, or
  • You can mail your check to: College Park PTSA/Holiday Outreach, 201 Viking Drive, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

All donations are tax deductible and are needed as soon as possible to be given out for the holiday season. (Donations received after Winter Break will support our year-round CP Outreach program helping students in need. Donations for this program are accepted year round.)

If you filled out FAFSA/Dream Act and applied to California colleges, you could be eligible for a Cal Grant!

To find out  if you received one, you need to have filled out your FAFSA/Dream Act by Nov. 20 to allow for enough processing time. I can help you set up a Web Grants account after your FAFSA or Dream Act has processed. You will need to know your Social Security number or Dream Act ID.

Come to the Computer Lab in the library after school on Thurs., Dec. 14 from 2:40-4:00pm. It takes less than 10 minutes if you enter in your personal information correctly. Contact Ms. Lowe if you have questions.

Common Application Workshop, Mon., Dec. 18

Are you applying to schools using the Common Application? If yes and you'd like some help getting started, or you have some very specific questions about the application, please come to the Computer Lab in the library on Mon., Dec. 18.

We will be there from 2:40-4:00pm. Please contact Ms. Lowe  if you have questions.

Attention Seniors who have applied to a CSU or UC campus

You need to check your email on a regular basis. Every school will eventually email you to set up a portal, and you need to create that portal to receive important updates from them. If schools are missing part of your application, they only contact you through those modes of communication. This is very important!

Hello Senior Parents and Senior Falcons!

As you know, after you apply to a CSU (or any college for that matter) you need to send in your official SAT scores from collegeboard. The deadline to send in your SAT scores is not the same as the application deadline (which is tomorrow), but the deadline for SATs varies between each school.

In order for all of your CSUs to receive your SATs, you do not need to send your SAT to each CSU but instead send it using this code on Collegeboard: 3594.

This is really important, because I just found this out and have been telling students differently in workshops. I apologize, but this year CSUs explicitly stated that CSU mentor would be discontinued as their new application Cal State Apply is in use (3594 is the code for CSU Mentor).

Please stop by before school or during lunch if you need assistance, again I apologize for the confusion.

Best,

Ms. Lowe

PS- If you read this even though you took the ACT, you do not need to send your ACT to CSUs using the code 3594, the original rule still applies that when you send your ACT to one school that it will be shared with all the CSUs you applied to

If your student is a senior, it is very important that they register for an SAT or ACT as soon as possible. Sites can fill up closer to the registration deadline, and it is unfortunate when a student needs to travel far to take an important test before 7:00am on a Saturday morning.

In addition, the colleges or universities that your student are applying to will stop accepting test scores that are taken after a certain date. For UCs a student cannot take a test after December 2017 and for CSUs dates are TBA. If your student needs a fee waiver, have them come see Ms. Lowe in the Career Center, S7.

Please join us for our first PTSA meeting of the school year on Tues., Sept. 12 at 7:00pm. We will be discussing our plans for the upcoming year, approving our annual budget and introducing our new College & Career Counselor, Heather Lowe.

College Park is a large school and one of the best ways to ensure success for your student is to become a part of the community and get involved. So many parents are actively involved during the elementary school years only to find a "disconnect" when their kids reach high school. There are lots of opportunities to stay involved with your child's education.

Please join us on Tuesday in the school library at 7:00pm and meet Principal Joe Alvarez and your fellow Falcon parents. We look forward to seeing you there! Click here for the agenda.

Hello Falcon Community,

The School Site Council is a group of teachers, parents, classified employees, and students that works with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets. The members of the Site Council are elected by their peers. For example, parents elect the parent representatives and teachers elect teachers.

The exact duties of School Site Councils vary from state to state and even between districts in the same state, but Site Councils generally either make decisions or advise the principal on the school budget and the academic or school improvement plan. In addition to academic planning, many Site Councils are also responsible for making decisions about parent engagement, safety and discipline, for examples.

Over the course of a year, a typical Council might consider the goals of the school or district and then work with the principal to evaluate the school's progress toward those goals. In this evaluation, the Council might consider school test scores, attendance and discipline records, parent surveys and input from students.

After looking at the big picture of the school's progress, the Council and the principal create a plan for improvement. This plan might involve a new academic program, staff member or parent outreach strategy. For example, one Council might use funds to develop a new math program, while another might decide to hire a reading specialist. Another Council might decide that hiring an additional teacher to reduce class sizes in a particular grade or a parent liaison to get more parents involved would be the best use of its money. Because school budgets are limited and many funds can only be spent in certain ways, there are always tough decisions to make.

College Park's School Site Council meets the last Wednesday of each month from 3:00-4:30pm in the Career Center (located in room S-7). If you should have any questions please contact Principal Alvarez at alvarezj@mdusd.org or at 925-682-7670 ext.3200. We currently have three vacancies for the parent/community member position.

Please consider nominating yourself or someone else you believe could support CPHS through this vital committee.

Please click here to download a nomination form. Please submit the nomination form by Wed., Sept. 13 in the evening. Voting ballots will be available at Back-to-School Night or you can get one by coming by the Main Office at College Park.

The final tally count will be made on Wed., Sept. 20.

On behalf of the College Park PTSA, I want to welcome you all to another exciting school year. As your PTSA President, I look forward to meeting and working with parents, teachers, students, and administrators to ensure a successful year for our entire Falcon community. The PTSA is extremely proud of the resources it provides to students and staff. Last year, the PTSA gave more than $13,000 to our school programs and departments. These resources benefit all of our children and it would not be possible without your financial support.

Our largest (and only) fundraiser of the year is the $100 family donation we ask for at the beginning of each school year. With your help, we can continue to provide funding for academic and elective sections in science, math, English, history, fine arts, technology, and so much more. Click on the link at https://collegeparkptsa.revtrak.net/ or visit the Webstores page of our website to make a donation. Working together, we can make it happen for the 2,000+ students at our school. We invite you to attend our PTSA meetings and to get involved in the myriad of Booster organizations that support our programs. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully,
Cindy Turner

ONLINE DATA CONFIRMATION  ** NEW THIS YEAR TO COLLEGE PARK**

Online Data Confirmation is a feature of Aeries that allows parents to confirm and update student demographics, contacts, medical conditions, and authorization information through their HomeLink Parent Portal account.  This process handles the normal “Summer Re-Registration” of students where parents are normally required to fill out fresh emergency cards, sign various documents, and establish authorizations.

When parents log into the Aeries Parent Portal, Data Confirmation will display in the Student Info Tab dropdown.

A Yellow message will also display to the parent on their home page if they have not completed the data confirmation process.

If you do not have access to a Parent Portal account, please contact Stacy Boschetti in Attendance @ (925) 682-7670, ext. 3213 or via email at boschettis@mdusd.org to get your verification codes. Attendance will open on August 1st.

FAILURE TO COMPLETE THIS PROCESS WILL RESULT IN YOUR STUDENT NOT RECEIVING THEIR CLASS SCHEDULE.

We are hard at work planning for the 2017-18 school year and will do our best to bring updates throughout the summer with information or opportunities for students.

One opportunity we are currently seeing is in AP Art History. Students who are looking for an opportunity for an AP course that fulfills A-G art requirements may find that AP Art History is a great fit! Interested students should email Ms. McCraney at mccraneym@mdusd.org and Mr. Miles at milesd@mdusd.org.

For an idea of the content/workload, please take a look at Ms McCraney's 2016-17 syllabus at http://cphs.mdusd.org/file/1263280767223/1319263649400/3363831134788033441.pdf

Thank you!

Thank you very much to the more than 200 volunteers who helped make Grad Nite a huge success for our graduating seniors.

There is one final need for volunteers. This Sat., June 10, from 9:00am-2:00pm, we need people to come to the Concord Centre to help take down the decorations. If you are available for any period of time during those hours, please join us.

We need some strong people who can help lift heavy items and put them back in the shed. Someone with a truck would be helpful as well.

We are putting out a plea for more gift cards for the Grad Nite 2017 prize booth. Very few families have contributed this year compared to years past.

Any amount for anywhere would be great (movies, food, or clothing stores). Please drop them off at the office counter at school and they will be put in the Grad Nite mailbox. Thank you everyone!

Seniors: If you have not completed your senior transcript request/senior survey with Mrs. Welsh please go see her any brunch or lunch time to get it done.

It is crucial that you do this because all colleges require your final transcript. If you neglect to send one they can rescind your offer of a place (and you won't even get your deposits back!)

Prior experience and knowledge of the game is great, but not required. Parents and students are invited to meet our coaches, team parents, and returning players on the pool deck at College Park on Thurs., June 1 at 7:00pm. (The pool is located at the back right-hand side of the campus.)

We will provide general information about the overall program, and details regarding the summer opportunities for training before the season kicks off on August 14. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in more info, please contact Coach John DeLuca.

College Park High School has teamed up with Future Ford Lincoln of Concord. They are helping us with a fundraising event to raise money for the school. Stop by and test drive one of their new standard Ford vehicles or a new standard Lincoln vehicle with absolutely no obligation to buy.

For each test drive taken by a participant, $20.00 will be donated to College Park High School (up to a total of $3,000). Future Ford Lincoln of Concord will be supplying brand new Ford Cars to drive; it'll only take 150 test drives to earn $3,000! It's that simple: test drive a car and the school will get paid $20.00! There is no catch!

There is absolutely no obligation on your part, other than to test drive a new car! Who doesn't like to test drive cars? So tell all your friends and family to stop by Future Ford Lincoln of Concord; we look forward to seeing you!

There are two different days to participate:
  • Saturday, May 13 from 10-4pm and
  • Saturday, May 20 from 10-4pm

As we all know life brings change.  This holds true with our coaching staff.  Long time basketball coach Troy Faulk announced today that he will be stepping down effective immediately.  Coach Faulk shared with the team today at lunch his difficult decision, saying goodbye to a program he has been dedicated to for nine years.  He has always expected his student-athletes to be all in, and has the same expectation for himself.  His new job and family commitments have led him to take some time away from the team and the sport he loves.

Coach Faulk has coached at College Park since2008, serving as a varsity assistant.  He was on staff for three DVAL championships, and the Nor Cal /State Finals run in 2013.  In 2015 Coach Faulk took over the head job, leading to team to a DVAL championship season, NCS birth and posting a 22-7 record.  During Coach Faulk’s three years as the head coach, they posted a 49-33 overall record, won two DVAL championships, and advanced to NCS each season.

One of Coach Faulk’s key contributions during his tenure has been the College Park team room in the small gym.  The space has lockers, record boards, team benches, and a flat screen tv for the team to take advantage of.  This room is not only used by the basketball programs but our volleyball teams as well.  Troy made it a priority to push this project to completion with paperwork and fundraising.

Coach Faulk’s lasting contribution will always be the young men he has mentored during his time here at CP.  He as always asked his players for their best and they have responded in kind.  His professionalism, attention to detail, and passion for the game will be missed.  There were handshakes and a more than a few teary eyes today when Troy spoke to the team.

Thank you Coach Faulk for your dedication and service here at College Park.  You will be missed.

We would at the same time like to welcome our new girls’ volleyball coach, Melissa Ralls.  Coach Ralls played for two years at Merced College as a Libero.  She brings seven years of coaching experience to College Park, having coached at the Middle School, High School and club levels.  Coach Ralls currently coaches at Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy in the offseason.  She has met with the team and will be announcing her staff and plans for team workouts shortly.  Coach Ralls fills the position previously held by Kent Perkins who stepped down for family and health reasons.

Dear Falcon Community,

We had a very successful WASC visit and with all our commendations the committee also left us with recommendations and reflective points to follow-up on.

I will be canceling the April 20 "Cup of Joe with Principal Joe" and instead reschedule it so that I can present and dialogue with you an action plan for addressing the recommendations. With your input, I'm sure we can submit a strong action plan to the WASC commission that will guide our work for the future. Please plan on meeting May 5 from 8:00-9:00am in the staff lounge, located adjacent to multi-use room.

Thank you!

Steve Nixon Memorial Scholarship

Steve Nixon was a teacher and then a Vice Principal at College Park for over 20 years. Steve embodied fairness, personal improvement, higher education and was a team player. Steve would work with us to make good things happen for the students and staff of College Park. He wanted to get to know people so that he could work with their strengths. Steve considered each person an individual and students a work-in progress.  He would never give up on any student, and would help them become the best possible individual. Steve truly believed that students and their successes were why we came to work each day. Steve cared about students, parents, and staff, then pushed each to excel and was supportive in each of our situations. He was also known for giving compliments at just the right moment, which showed just how much he cared. He made a difference in so many students’ lives.

Selection Criteria will be based on an essay application.

To apply: Write a short essay on one or more of the following:

  • How have you shown resiliency and perseverance in your life?
  • What have you done to improve College Park?
  • How have you overcome obstacles?
  • Why is higher education important to you?

The purpose of the $500 scholarship is to help fund a student’s higher education in Steve’s memory.  Students whom fit the criteria can submit their essay application to Ms. Baker, Ms. Vietor or Ms. Jones at College Park.

The application deadline for students will be Friday, April 14, 2017.

If you have any questions about the scholarship please email Coach Jones at jonessw@mdusd.org .

Dear College Park Community,

I would like to commend you, our families, as we continue to have the best students in the district!  Each and every day I am in awe of the quality of our student body, and I am sure this is what our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) visiting committee will see as well.

As a reminder, our WASC visit will be March 26-29. We have submitted our self-study to the WASC Commission and have received positive initial feedback from our WASC Chairperson.  This is a fluid document--after the visiting committee has completed their visit, we will have an opportunity to revise our action plan to reflect our strategy to address their feedback and recommendations.

There is absolutely no reason to think or feel that we will not be continuing as a fully accredited high school.  I thank you for your continued support and if you should have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Best Regards,

Joe Alvarez

The Grad Nite committee is looking for a volunteer who is able to help the Food Chair for this year's Grad Nite. An underclass parent (or two!)  is needed to help make this event successful.  This individual will need to be present while the Food Chair is at the graduation ceremony so it should not be a senior parent.

Ideally, this individual would take over the Food Chair position for next year's Grad Nite. If you are interested in helping out, would like to learn more about the position or know of someone who would be interested, please contact Jennifer Tipton at jtip76@gmail.com. Thank you for your help--Grad Nite can't succeed without it!

The Math Department needs volunteers for our annual Math Field Day (in honor of Pi Day) taking place on Fri., Mar. 24 during the school day.

The math teachers have developed stations at which students will calculate area, circumference, slope, estimate volume and calculate geometric probability. We will even have a contest to see who can recite the most digits of pi. Concepts will be explored using bubbles, basketballs, a trebuchet, marshmallows, and even a giant pizza! Students will be attending only during their math classes as directed by their own math teachers.

We need parent volunteers to help with the stations, coordinate the desserts (students must find volume before consuming) and more. (Math/science background is not required for volunteers.) Please click here to sign up.

Questions? Please contact Kathleen Strange at strangek@mdusd.org.

Some corrections from Junior Parent Night:
  • The ACT/SAT dates on the hand out are from 2015-16. This year's ACT dates are April 8 and June 10. This year's SAT dates are March 11, May 6 and June 3.
  • Mrs. Welsh was having a senior moment when she said there was no German SAT subject test. She has known about the German subject test for at least 15 years and why the response "No" popped out of her mouth is an embarrassing mystery for which she sincerely apologizes!

We're sending you this message on behalf of the College Park High School Athletic Boosters Crab Feed Committee. The annual Crab Feed/Auction will take place on Sat., Feb. 4 at the Pleasant Hill Community Center. We are in charge of the dessert auction for the event. Last year the Dessert Dash was a big success and a lot of fun!

We are reaching out to all the school's bakers and asking for dessert donations to be auctioned off. We aren't picky and will take anything you are willing to donate to us. We would like desserts to be delivered to the Pleasant Hill Community Center on the date of the event from 10:00am-1:00pm. If that's not possible, we can make other arrangements to pickup the dessert.

If you can help with a donation, please send us  an email at kjscharff@gmail.com and bridget_2399@yahoo.com and let us know what item you will be donating.

We would like to emphasis that we want all dessert presentations to look elegant and classy.

Thanks so much for your support!

Juniors! 2017 is your year of college apps and admission tests! It is extremely unwise to take the ACT or SAT without practicing. We will be holding a mock ACT and SAT test (you choose which one you want to practice) on Sat., Jan. 28.

This time we are using a new system: you will take the test and then immediately afterwards key in your answers via your phone or tablet (or a Career Center computer) to get an almost instantaneous score.

Mark your calendars now. Registration will be different from previous years. In order to have your scores marked you will need to set up an account with Princeton Review so you will be registering through them, NOT through the CPHS web store as before. The test will cost $15, which will be used to pay custodial fees for that Saturday. Any profit will go to the Career Center, not to Princeton Review. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch can take the test for free.

Dear College Park High School Families,

I wanted to let you know that we are changing locations for this year's commencement ceremony on June 6 from the Concord Pavilion to Diablo Valley College, due to the late scheduling of a concert at the Pavilion on the same day.  We are easily accommodated at DVC and it  may actually be more convenient for many families.  The relocation also enables us to keep traditional grad night activities on the same evening.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Joseph G. Alvarez

Thank you so much for the outpouring of donations that we received for this year's Holiday Outreach program. We were able to collect more than $7,000 to help our students in need. This is enough to fund our Outreach program for the 2016-2017 school year. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our College Park families and our wider community. Thank you!

If you'd like to hear more about College Park's Outreach program and how your donations help our students, please come to our next PTSA meeting on Tues., Jan. 10 at 7:00pm in the library. Our guest speaker will be Nathalie Keating, Student Resource Technician. Nathalie will share some stories about how College Park students are benefiting from the Outreach program donations. We hope to see you there!

Seniors should pay attention to these reminders:
  • If you applied to a 4-year school you must send your ACT/SAT scores officially. Self-reporting is not sufficient, you also need to send them from the test company.
  • If you applied to CSU you may well have to take a math and/or English placement test (ELM/EPT). Find out more about the tests, how you can be exempt, how to register, etc. at https://www.ets.org/csu/about.
  • Don't forget about applying for scholarships. The two biggest local scholarships (Assistance League and Rossmoor) are now in the Scholarship Binder in the Career Center. Check them out!
  • NO SENIORITIS!!  Please remember all college acceptances are PROVISIONAL. They are conditional on your passing all your college prep classes with at least a C and maintaining at least an overall 3.0. If you earn a D or an F in any class that counts for college (even if it is surplus to your a-g requirements) it could very well smash your dreams of attending a 4-year school straight out of high school. Hundreds of offers of admission are revoked every year--we don't want any of them to be for College Park students.
Juniors and Seniors
There will be a career talk by the US Marine Corps on Wed. Jan. 11 in the Career Center at 11:30am. Pick up a pass from the Career Center. You must get permission from your RTI teacher to attend.

There will be an information session with Yale University in the Career Center at 11:30 am on Thurs., Jan. 12. Pick up a pass from the Career Center. You must get permission from your RTI teacher to attend.

New waste stations will be popping up at College Park in January 2017. Each station will have a bin for garbage (destined for the landfill), recycling and composting.  State law AB1826 requires any business or school that produces 4 or more yards of organic waste (defined as yard and food waste) per week (that's us) to separate that out of the trash  so the material can be composted.  The Earth Club and Social Awareness Club are working with Republic Services (our garbage company) and the school administration to make it happen. Please help us turn our food waste into rich garden soil by checking out the posters that show what can be composted and by adding your food and food-contaminated organic waste to the compost collection bins.  Let's save our planet -- we're the ones who will be living in it.
