We will begin statewide testing on Mon., May 21. We will be on a modified block schedule from Mon., May 21-Fri., June 1.

Juniors will be taking the CAASPP testing for these 2 weeks in their Social Studies/English classes. Seniors will test during 1 period of Government or Econ class. 

Students are asked to please bring their own earbuds that plug into the audio of computers for testing.

Want a top locker? Interested in choosing your own locker for next school year?  

We are looking for parent and student volunteers to sign up for our CPHS locker clean-out day happening on Fri., June 8.
 

This is a first-come, first-serve opportunity and there are a limited number of spots available. Students can sign-up in Student Services South with Mrs. Carpenter on Tues., May 15. Email sign -ups for students will NOT be accepted. Names will NOT be accepted until Tues., May 15.
 

Parent help is needed, and if you volunteer, your student will have first priority for signing up. Parents, please email Julie Carpenter your contact information to sign up for the locker clean-up. All parent volunteers must be present on the day of the locker clean-out for their students to be able to participate, unless students get on the sign-up list on their own.

Dear College Park families,

 

As I am sure you know, what should have been a wonderful and memorable Saturday night for our students - attending the Senior Ball - instead ended with frustration and anger, after we discovered 37 cars in the student lot with windows smashed and some student possessions taken.  It was pure, malicious vandalism.

 

Pleasant Hill Police are investigating, and I would urge anyone with information to contact police immediately so that the vandal(s) can be arrested, and be made to pay for repairs to all of the vehicles.  I understand some leads are already being looked into but the more information the better.

 

I wanted to let you know that I am working with our facilities department to accelerate a planned installation of additional lighting in the area of the student lot near the football field, and surveillance cameras.  This will be an important safety and security enhancement for our campus.  I will let you know when the work will be getting underway.

 

Sadly, the vandalism was not the only disappointing incident Saturday.  We were extremely frustrated when the dee-jay for the dance did not show up.  There is no excuse for this. 

 

I realize an apology to students cannot alone erase the frustration they experienced this weekend, but I hope something can help.

 

On May 29, we will be having our Senior Banquet. Typically, this is a ticketed event with entertainment. In order to make up to our students in some small way for Saturday's challenges, we are changing this to a free, no-ticket event and with the entertainment our students expected and deserved Saturday. ALL seniors who qualify will be encouraged to attend the banquet - they will just need to sign up and fill out a permission slip.

 

Even on an evening that went so sideways, I was proud to see our students figure out how to make the best of a bad situation, and still make the night a memorable one for all the right reasons.  They reminded me of a quote I love from John Wooden - a basketball coach at UCLA who was beloved by his athletes in part for his inspirational advice.  "Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

On Tuesday, May 8 our choir students will be singing the national anthem at the Oakland Coliseum for the A's game against the World Series champion Houston Astros. 

The A's organization has made a block of discounted tickets available so that the CPHS community can enjoy an evening at the ballpark. The field level tickets are available for just $25, but the deadline to purchase was Sun., Apr. 22.

SENIOR BANQUET will be on Tues., May 29 from 6:00-8:00pm in the College Park High School multi-use room. This is a fun evening for all who attend. Tickets can be purchased on the CPHS webstore.

 

SENIOR AWARDS NIGHT will be on Tues., May 22 from 6:00-8:00pm.  This event will be in the College Park Quad (weather permitting).  Students who receive an invitation will be recognized. Therefore, appropriate dress attire is required: slacks, collared shirts, skirts, and dresses. All seniors and guests are welcome to attend.

 

BACCALAUREATE will be held on Sun., June 3, 12:00-1:00pm at St. Andrews Church in Pleasant Hill. This is a non-denominational service coordinated by the parents of the Class of 2018. Attendance is optional. Seniors should arrive by 11:45am dressed in their caps and gowns. Outdoor reception immediately following (weather permitting). GRADUATION CEREMONY REHEARSAL will be held at Concord Pavilion on Wed., June 6 at 8:30am. All seniors must attend the practice to be eligible to participate in the evening graduation/commencement ceremony.

 

GRADUATION/COMMENCEMENT will be held at Concord Pavilion on Wed., June 6 at 7:00pm. Parking fee is $10 per vehicle. There is NO reserved seating. Holding large blocks of seats for family and friends is not allowed. Seating is on a "first come, first serve" basis. Seniors must arrive to Concord Pavilion no later than 6:15pm and report to the West Plaza area with their caps and gowns to line up and start the commencement ceremony promptly at 7:00pm.

 

DIPLOMA PICK-UP Students will be given empty diploma covers on stage. Diplomas can be picked up after graduation behind the stage at the Concord Pavilion. Diplomas not picked up that evening can be picked up at College Park High School in Student Services North from June 8-June 14. Students who borrowed a cap and gown, your diplomas will be held until the cap and gown is returned. Additionally, students who have fines to pay will also have their diplomas held. Return borrowed cap and gown items to Ms. Kanan in SSN & pay fines with the Treasurer.

Your student who registered for AP testing should've received a personalized version of the email below. Please note that the location of the test is at Willow Creek Center, not College Park AND that the test needs to start at 7:00AM for morning exams and 11:30AM for afternoon exams. 

 

Remember to bring your pen, pencil, and ID. Cell phones should be left in the trunk of your cars.  Water bottles must have their labels removed. Each test is around 3-4 hours.

2018 ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAM INFORMATION

 

 

IMPORTANT

At the testing site, check-in process for morning exams will begin at 7:00 AM.   College Board’s lengthy instructions need to start by 7:30, so you can begin your test at 8AM, as required by College Board.  Check-in for afternoon exams will begin at 11:30 AM.  Please arrive on time.  Late arrivals will not be admitted if instructions have begun.

 

Cell phones and all personal items must be placed in the front of the room if you bring them to the test.

 

Please bring the following items to every test:

  • Photo ID card. You will not be admitted to the test without one.
  • Several sharpened #2 pencils with erasers, and several black or blue ink ballpoint pens. (Mechanical pencils are not permitted.)
  • A College Board approved calculator and extra batteries for students taking Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or Statistics.  (A ruler or straight edge is optional for the Physics exam only.)

Please show this letter to the Attendance Secretary after returning to school following your morning test and before leaving school for an afternoon test. AP Coordinators will clear absences and report any test absences for all scheduled tests on a daily basis.

Be reminded that District school policy does not permit students to drive other students to or from the tests.

 

STUDENTS WITH JOBS

Please let your supervisor know that afternoon tests could run long and that you may not be available until 5PM.

 

LOCATION

All tests are conducted at Willow Creek Center, 1026 Mohr Lane, Concord.

 

PARKING

Parking at Willow Creek is extremely limited. Do not park in reserved spots.  Drop off and pick up is suggested, if possible. A phone is available in the AP Office to call home for pick up. If you park on residential street, please be careful not to block someone’s driveway.  Do not park in the red zone curbs in the front, or you will risk getting a ticket. If you have never been to Willow Creek Center, 1026 Mohr Lane in Concord, you should do a weekend drive-by.

 

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Bus – Route 14 (The County Connection) stops in front of Willow Creek Center.   Please visit http://511.org for information.

The Grad Nite Prize Committee is asking for donations of gift cards and actual items for the prize booth, an ongoing raffle during Grad Nite that is lots of fun for the graduating seniors! 
  • Gift card ideas:
    • gas, iTunes, Amazon, Target, The Habit, Chipotle, Starbucks, Panda Express, Cold Stone, Cream, movie tickets, BART tickets, any gift cards sold at local grocery or warehouse stores.

We still need 120 volunteers for Grad Nite on Wed., June 6.  Come be a blackjack dealer or welcome the kids with a breathalyzer test (this has traditionally been one of the most fun jobs, but most of the parents have seniors this year).  
 

If you can't work the event itself, we need help the weekend before and after with decorating and take-down.  Volunteering for this event is so much fun.

We are looking for people who can bake or buy some desserts and/or breakfast items for Grad Nite. As many cookies, cupcakes, brownies, bagels, breakfast or dessert muffins as you can donate to us would be great!

 

We will need these dropped off beginning Sat., June 2, through Tues., June 5, before 9:00pm each day. Drop off is at Jessie Rojas' house at 2299 Yellowstone Drive, Martinez. There will be a table in her front courtyard area so you can walk and drop.

The goal of the College Park PTSA is to provide opportunities for all students to reach their maximum potential. We work with teachers, parents, community members, and students to ensure the needs of students are being met. To this end, we are proud to offer scholarships to deserving, graduating seniors who demonstrate both personal success and the ability and desire to share their talents with others to make a difference in their community.

Scholarships are awarded to students who embody these ideals by working within their own groups of family, friends, and community to make a difference to others. Please note that although a student is required to be a member of the PTSA in order to receive a PTSA scholarship, students are not required to have attended PTSA meetings or work directly with the College Park PTSA. We realize that many organizations support our ideals and encourage all students who meet the criteria to apply for the PTSA scholarship.

For example, consider applying for the Mary Lee Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was implemented in April 2011 to remember Mary Lee, College Park High School Registrar. Mrs. Lee passed away on Mar. 22, 2011. She worked in the Mount Diablo Unified School District for 15 years. She is remembered for her enthusiastic willingness to help anyone in need. Her kindness and twinkling smile are legendary.

It's time to prepare the 2018 Senior Memory Boards for Grad Nite. Here's how it works:

  • Pick up a Grad Nite Memory Board and instructions, from the Main Office (Student Services North) through May 30 (one board per Senior)
  • Click here to download detailed instructions
  • Decorate any way you would like: pictures, team logos etc.  
  • Take the completed Memory Board to the FedEx Office at 622 Contra Costa Blvd, Pleasant Hill, to have it laminated no later than May 31

The Grad Nite team will pick up your Memory Boards from the FedEx Office and ensure they are hung with pride at Grad Night on June 6. Seniors will be given Memory Boards to take home from Grad Nite.

The Math Department needs volunteers for our annual Math Field Day taking place on Friday, April 13, 2018 during the school day.

 

The math teachers have developed stations at which students will calculate area, circumference, slope, estimate volume and calculate geometric probability.

 

We have new stations this year along with some old favorites. AP Calculus students will be on hand to assist with the math. Students will be attending only during their math classes as directed by their own math teachers.


We need parent volunteers to help with the stations, coordinate the desserts (students must find volume before consuming) and more. (Math/science background is not required for volunteers.)

Hello!

 

If your senior missed the previous DVC sessions, they have arrange two makeup sessions. These sessions will be held on DVC's campus in the Student services Center in the Assessment room on the first floor. Students need to email assessmentcenter@dvc.edu to register to attend either session on April 12th and April 18th at 3:15 pm

 

In order to attend students will need to complete the following steps:

 

  • Complete both Spring and Summer 2018 applications (needs to be completed before they email the assessment center)
  • Complete the online orientation www.dvc.edu/orientation
  • Bring their unofficial high school transcripts, and their completed Special Admit Form (all of this can be obtained by going to the College and Career Center during lunch). These need to be brought to the assessment session.
  • Physical photo identification (high school ID, driver's license, passport, etc.) We do not use photos of identification. Bring this to the assessment session.

College Park has reserved times for students to take their orientation and assessments as DVC. In order to attend the Orientation and Assessment Sessions students must do the following things:
  1. Complete their Spring 2018 and Summer 2018 applications
  2. Sign up with me (Ms Lowe) by providing their full name and DVC ID (this can be done in person or via email)
  3. Complete the Special Admit form by getting a counselor signature and listing the section of Counseling 095 they want to take (forms are located in the College and Career Center)

Students are allowed to take classes concurrently at DVC while they are in high school with prior approval from the high school. They cannot earn credits on their College Park transcripts unless they are taking a class that is not offered here at CP. Any courses taken that are offered at CP will go on college transcripts for students to submit in addition to their high school transcripts when applying to colleges.
 

Only seniors are eligible for an open period. All other students interested in taking DVC classes must do so outside of their regular schedule here at CP.

Give a special shout out to our theater performers who competed with over 1200 students from all across the state in performance and technical theatre categories this past weekend at the Ohlone College High School Theatre Festival!!  We sent in 14 entries and 5 were finalists!  Elanor Cheek won 2nd place overall for her horror make-up design!  Congratulations Elanor, the other finalists and all who dared to dream and compete on such a large stage!  It was a fantastic showing of our incredible talent at this school!

On Thursday, April 12th all sophomores at College Park will be taking the PSAT 10 during the school day. The test is offered to students for free and you do not need to register them. Please see the attached schedule to understand the modified schedule on April 11th and April 12th.

 

The PSAT 10 is a shortened version of the SAT that gives students a chance to practice standardized testing, and the scores are not sent to colleges.

The CPHS choir program has been invited to participate in the Sounds of Summer music festival in New York in June 2019, the week after graduation. This exciting, once-in-a-lifetime experience will feature performances at Carnegie Hall and the famous Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park. All choir students in good standing will be eligible to go on the trip, including class of '19 seniors and current 8th graders who will be taking a choir class next year. Family members will be welcome and encouraged to purchase tour packages and travel along with the group. 

 

We will hold a meeting in the choir room (M2) from 7:00-8:00pm tonight (Tues., Mar. 13). We will discuss the trip itinerary, costs, eligibility requirements, fundraising opportunities, and possible sight-seeing activities.

The AHA! Movement (Anti-Hazing Awareness) was created in memory of Matthew Carrington, who was killed by water hazing while pledging a fraternity in Chico, CA in 2005. He was a student at Ygnacio Valley HS and his younger brother attended College Park.

In 2017, there were three documented deaths in this country due to fraternity hazing.  The goal of AHA! is to end the senseless and tragic cycle of deaths from hazing by reaching out, empowering and educating young people.  

This Parent Ed night will initiate a productive conversation surrounding the dangers of hazing and how to recognize it, as well as interactive activities. Debbie Smith (Mathew's mother) will share his story, show video, explore alternatives to hazing and end with a Q&A. We will also discuss peer pressure, the difference between hazing and bullying, mindset, group mentality and making better choices.

Orientation & assessments at DVC
College Park has reserved times for students to take their orientation and assessments as DVC. In order to attend the Orientation and Assessment Sessions students must do the following things:
  1. Complete their Spring 2018 and Summer 2018 applications
  2. Sign up with me (Ms Lowe) by providing their full name and DVC ID (this can be done in person or via email)
  3. Complete the Special Admit form by getting a counselor signature and listing the section of Counseling 095 they want to take (forms are located in the College and Career Center)
  4. Bring photo ID, transcript, and CAASPP score to the session

Did you know that we have a new girls sports team at College Park High School? It's STUNT team. Okay, so what is STUNT team? Will our girls learn how to jump out of a 10-story burning building? Throw a punch in a Western brawl? No, it's not the stunts that we see in the movies--it's Cheer STUNT.

STUNT was chosen by the College Park High School Athletic department to promote teamwork, strength and technical skills for all team members. STUNT focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling. These elements are put together in short routines that two teams  perform head-to-head on the floor at the same time. The team that executes the skills best wins the round and the point, and has the opportunity to determine which routine level will be called next. With four quarters of play STUNT is an exciting sport to play, coach and watch. 

The MDUSD STUNT league consists of six high schools: College Park, Acalanes, Concord, Alhambra, Miramonte, Clayton Valley and Los Lomas. The coaches and athletic departments have coordinated a flagship season that focuses on safety, mastery of technical STUNTS and friendly competition.

Please support our new STUNT team every Wednesday in March by going to Organic Coup restaurant (Pleasant Hill, Crescent Plaza location). They will donate 10% of the days sales to the CP STUNT team.

In case you are having trouble coming up with ideas of what to do with your summer, I've been updating the College & Career Center website with different opportunities that are available. 

These are by no means the only option available to you, but I would recommend investigating/planning your summer earlier because August can roll around faster than you think.

 

Juniors: Check out Questbridge. It's a lengthy application and has very specific requirements for eligibility, but it provides amazing financial aid.
 

Freshmen: Check out SMASH. It's a summer program for minority students.

Every student who attends Grad Nite will need to turn in a City of Concord waiver! Even if you have bought your ticket, you will not be let in without a waiver turned in. 

Visit www.cpgradnite.com to download this form. When you are on this website, in the upper right hand corner click on ticket information and you will see a dropdown box, click City of Concord waiver. 

Download it, print it, read it, sign it, (have a parent sign it if you are under 18) and turn it in to the main office in the basket marked Grad Nite. These need to be turned in before Grad Nite!

The Claw is the official online and print newspaper of College Park High School. The website is updated every two weeks. The newspaper will be printed once a quarter throughout the school year. The paper and website is a product of Mr. Castro’s journalism class and his students:

Antonio Aird-Shires, Emma Cole, Will Ennis, Alexis Esparza, Zoe Holzer, Jamie Kang, Bailey Keck, Linda Salas, Travis Penniall, Jessica Rosas, Camdyn Simpson, and Naomi Zuniga.

The class and the paper offer a space for students to explore issues and events affecting their school and local community, in addition to national and international events. Students are provided with the opportunity to express themselves and have a voice that may be shared on a digital and print platform. Guest writers are welcome to contact us and inquire about upcoming stories or present ideas. Opinion pieces express the thoughts and ideas of the individual writer, not the paper as a whole.

 

Photo Submissions

Submit photos of CP events to florescastrom@mdusd.net. Please include your first and last name and grade level if applicable. Also, include first and last names and grade levels of students or CP staff in photos.

Baseball tryouts continue this week
 
All players interested in trying out for the baseball team should be aware that tryouts will be held Feb. 5-10 at the CP baseball diamond.

Frosh 3:15-5:15pm

***No player will be permitted to tryout without completing his on-line clearance/medical forms. Forms can be downloaded at www.collegeparkathletics.com

 

Players new to the program and all incoming Frosh players need to wear a plain white T-shirt with the player's last name printed clearly on the top/back. His grade should also be printed in large numbers on the back of the T-shirt as his number.

 

Any winter sport athlete intending to come out for baseball must contact Coach Tarp directly during the week of tryouts. The athlete will be expected to come out the day after his winter sport concludes and will be given a 3-day tryout.

 

Initial teams/rosters will be posted on the purple equipment shed on the morning of Mon., Feb. 12. 

 

Any questions should be directed to Coach Tarp at the baseball diamond between February 5-10.

Thirty-Second District PTA serves the youth and families of Contra Costa County. Each year, we award up to four $500.00 scholarships to high school seniors graduating from Contra Costa County high schools that participate in an active PTSA. These scholarships focus on the categories of:

  • school volunteering
  • community service
  • personal challenge and 
  • exemplification of PTA values 

Scholarship applicants must be in good standing at their school, and have a grade point average of 2.0; transcripts are not required. Applicants must also be a member of your high school PTSA.

Dear CPHS Parents and Guardians,

For the last three years, CPHS has included an RTI (Response to Intervention) period in the CPHS bell schedule. (RTI occurs on Wednesdays and Thursdays for approximately one hour each day.) RTI is a time during the school day in which students can participate in enrichment and/or intervention activities. Most students choose to complete homework, make up tests, or get additional teacher help during this RTI time. Activities in the past include participating in math competitions, planning and presenting Human Rights Assemblies, and receiving information about college and career.

We are interested in knowing if you support RTI and/or if you have ideas for enrichment/intervention activities during this RTI time. Any idea you submit must be related to one of our School-wide Learner Outcomes* (see below)

Please keep in mind that we are limited by our school size, the available facilities, and contract agreements. We have also learned that trying to introduce too many ideas can lead to a breakdown in the system, so please understand that not all supported ideas can be implemented quickly. (Students will be given a separate survey.)

Space is limited as we are meeting in the library so there will be another session on Feb. 22. 

 

DSS Enrollment Session

On Thurs., Feb. 15 during RTI the Disability Support Service office at DVC will host a session in the library's computer lab. This is an ideal session for students who currently have an IEP, 504, etc. To get a pass students must see Ms. Lowe in the College and Career Center during lunch or before school by Wed., Feb. 14.

Dear College Park,

Between January 4 and January 25, 2018, students using mdusd.net emails addresses were only receiving emails from mdusd.net or mdusd.org email addresses. Any emails from outside email addresses, such as companies and colleges, would not have been received by the student during this period in time.  

 

As this may be a concern to students filling out college applications and/or financial aid forms, we are asking that students be encouraged to check-in with institutions, for status updates, login in to their college portal  directly to see if there are outstanding items needed.

 

While unfortunately, we do not have full access to emails that may have been rejected during this time, we do have a report of emails that were rejected from mdusd.net accounts from .edu email addresses. Ms. Lowe was given a list of email headings and is in the process of reaching out to seniors about potentially urgent matters. Thank you for your support on this unfortunate situation. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Why is this important? I'm sending midyear reports based on the applications that are in Naviance, and if you don't have a college application in your account then that important information won't get sent, and that jeopardizes your application.

 

So update Naviance with every college you applied to whether it's a CSU, UC, out-of-state public school, or private school and indicate that you sent your application.

Registration to sign up for Advanced Placement exams has begun.

 

To Register for AP tests: Students and parents will log on to the website, TotalRegistration (TR). Access this website through a link on your school’s website home page, or by typing this URL into your browser: www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/050659 Ms. Lowe will visiting every AP class beginning next week to help explain registration.

 

If you took AP tests last year, use your same email log-in and password. After you have filled all of the required boxes and chosen your test(s), you can print your confirmation.  TR will collect your test fees, payable with a credit or debit card, or by mailing a personal or cashier’s check, or money order to TR along with a copy of your test Confirmation Page.

 

Test cost: $98.00 per test when you register between January 15 and March 12, 2018. (You are highly encouraged to place your order as soon as you have established your tests. Don’t miss out, or incur late charges!)

 

Late Registration:  $153.00 ($55 late charge) per test from March 13-16.

 

Reduced Fee: Eligible students must use the same TR website to pay $5.00 per test. You must register between January 15 and March 16, 2018 and supply Ms. Lowe with a signed copy of your Free or Reduced eligibility form.

 

SSD: All accommodation requests and documentation must be submitted to College Board no later than February 23, 2018. Make sure that accommodations are up to date if you have been previously approved. It is recommended that you start this process as soon as possible.

College Park community, we had a traumatic injury this past Wednesday.

 

Everyone's friend, 16 year old College Park High School Falcon sophomore Ryan Joseph, son of Castro Valley High School and UC Berkeley Alum and Kristin Joseph and De La Salle Hall of Famer and Grinnell College Alum Tom Joseph, suffered a life-changing C4 spinal cord injury in a JV wrestling match this past Wednesday, January 10th, 2018.  Ryan is currently paralyzed from the neck down and requires assistance breathing.  Hopes and prayers are for Ryan to have a speedy recovery and one day regain mobility for independent living.  Ryan is being well-treated at the John Muir Trauma ICU in Walnut Creek. Unfortunately, he is unable to receive visitors at this time, but cards are welcome.  

 

Ryan is well-known by friends, teachers and coaches for his charm, exceptional wit and humor.  His family gives heartfelt thanks for the kindness and support they have received from the many communities Ryan has touched at College Park, Pleasant Hill Middle School where his sister is an 8th grader, and Pleasant Hill Elementary School.  Special thanks to his beloved CP wrestling team where he was a first year JV at 160 pounds, and his CP lacrosse team where he was a freshman JV captain face-off midfielder.  A loyal Golden State Warriors fan, Ryan admires Andre Iguodala for his selflessness, intelligence and willingness to help in any way.

The PTSA is pleased to host an important discussion for both parents and students following our January meeting.  

 

Join us for an informative discussion with Jason Lechner, a licensed marriage and family therapist, about preventing substance abuse. For the last 15 years, Jason has worked in a number of the best adolescent and adult substance abuse treatment centers throughout the Bay Area. He has also lectured in many high schools to both students and parent education groups about the ever-changing nature of adolescent substance abuse and honest and straightforward prevention efforts.  

 

The lecture will cover basic science of addiction specific to adolescent brain chemistry and the current picture of marijuana and other drug use among teens.  He will also give some prevention and intervention tips specific for parents. Both parents and students are welcome to attend.

Hello Seniors!!!

 

If you would like to learn more about the programs, degrees, and benefits of going to DVC, please attend this information session on Thursday, January 25th during RTI.

 

The session will be led by a DVC representative in College Park's MU. In order to attend you need to get a pass from Ms. Lowe in the College and Career Center before school or during lunch or brunch. The last day to attain a pass is Wednesday the 24th during lunch.

 

The passes are not transferable and numbered. On the pass you will need your regular RTI teacher's signature and check-in for attendance on the day of the performance. Then go to the MU after checking-in with your RTI teacher, and hand the signed pass to the teacher at the main entry door of the MU. All passes will be checked with the sign out sheet to make sure that anyone that received a pass is attending the performance.

Hello Amazing Bakers!

 

We are sending you this message on behalf of the College Park High School Boosters Crab Feed Committee.  The annual crab feed/auction will take place  on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018, at the Pleasant Hill Community Center.  We are in charge of the dessert auction for the event.  We're reaching out to all the school’s bakers and asking for dessert donations to be auctioned off.  We aren’t picky and will take anything you are willing to donate to us.  We would like desserts to be delivered to the Pleasant Hill Community Center on the date of the event from noon - 2pm.

Each year the College Park PTSA organizes a "Holiday Outreach" program for those College Park families in need of extra help. The College Park teachers and staff have identified about 50 students in need. Our plan is to provide each of these families with a $50 gift card to Target to assist in making their holidays special. 

We have received less than $2,000 to date. Please remember that any donation amount will make a difference to these Falcon families.

If you weren't able to participate in Outdoor Education this fall, you can reapply for the spring! Outdoor Education is a chance for students to be camp counselors for elementary students. 

 

Students need to fill out this application and get approval from several teachers and one administrator in order to apply. It is strongly recommended that students attend the training session on Mon. Dec. 11 from 2:40-4:00pm in the library, and bring a completed application with them.

The CPHS Concert Choir has been invited back to sing the national anthem for the Golden State Warriors at the Oracle Arena for their game against the New York Knicks on Tues., Jan. 23 at 7:00pm. 

The Warriors organization has generously provided a small block of Club 200 tickets at a discount (box office price, no markup, taxes or convenience fees) for College Park families to enjoy the game.

Hello Senior Parents and Senior Falcons!

As you know, after you apply to a CSU (or any college for that matter) you need to send in your official SAT scores from collegeboard. The deadline to send in your SAT scores is not the same as the application deadline (which is tomorrow), but the deadline for SATs varies between each school.

In order for all of your CSUs to receive your SATs, you do not need to send your SAT to each CSU but instead send it using this code on Collegeboard: 3594.

This is really important, because I just found this out and have been telling students differently in workshops. I apologize, but this year CSUs explicitly stated that CSU mentor would be discontinued as their new application Cal State Apply is in use (3594 is the code for CSU Mentor).

Please stop by before school or during lunch if you need assistance, again I apologize for the confusion.

A Totally Radical Midsummer Night's Dream was inspired by William Shakespeare and adapted by CPHS Drama students and their teacher.

Come join the fun on Wed.-Sat., Nov. 2-4, and Tues.-Thurs., Nov. 7-9 at 7:00pm in the College Park multi-use room. 

Come watch as Shakespeare is transported into an 80s nightclub complete with dancing and karaoke to an 80s soundtrack! It will most definitely be totally tubular.

Girls soccer tryouts will be held Mon., Nov. 6 through Fri., Nov. 10.

 

Bring cleats, shin guards, water, running shoes and wear white shirt to all tryouts.  NO club soccer apparel.

 

Important: To participate in tryouts all students must have completed the online Athletic Clearance (see the school 

website under the Athletics tab) which includes proof of insurance and a completed Pre-participation Physical Evaluation form signed by your medical doctor. Please understand students will not be allowed to tryout until the Athletic Clearance is completed.

College park High School will be conducting a donation drive for our fire stricken neighbors in Santa Rosa.  We have been in contact with the administration at Maria Carillo High School and they have provided a wish list of needs for their students, over 140 of whom are now without a home. 

 

Our ASB students will be collecting items all this week from 7am-7:45am before school.  

 

The item requested are: three ring binders, dividers, lined paper reams, graphing paper reams, pencils, pens, highlighters, eraser, pencil pouches, Texas instrument T130XIIS Calculators, and planners - also in need of basic needs gift cards.

 

Thank you for being a Falcon supporter and helping our friends from the North Bay.

Attention Falcon Families,

 

Our winter sport season is right around the corner.  College Park winter sports include boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, and wrestling. 

 

The first day of practice and tryouts for our winter teams will be Monday, November 6th.  To participate in tryouts all students must have completed the online Athletic Clearance which includes proof of insurance and  a completed Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form signed by your medical doctor.  Visit the ATHLETICS PAGE of the website for details.

 

Please understand that students will not be allowed to practice until the Athletic Clearance is completed. 

 

Practice times and locations will be posted on the website shortly. 

 

To help answer questions and provide more detailed information we will be holding our Winter Sports Parent Information meeting in the main gym on Monday, October 23rd at 7:00pm.  Please plan on attending to hear from our Athletic Director, Administration, Athletic Trainer, Booster Club, and Coaches.

If your student is a senior, it is very important that they register for an SAT or ACT as soon as possible. Sites can fill up closer to the registration deadline, and it is unfortunate when a student needs to travel far to take an important test before 7:00am on a Saturday morning. 

In addition, the colleges or universities that your student are applying to will stop accepting test scores that are taken after a certain date. For UCs a student cannot take a test after December 2017 and for CSUs dates are TBA. If your student needs a fee waiver, have them come see Ms. Lowe in the Career Center, S7.

Mt. Diablo Unified School District continues to monitor air quality conditions as reported and forecasted by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), and  AirNow from the National Weather Service.

Due to the current conditions, we will keep Mt. Diablo Unified facilities closed on Friday, October 13 in the interest of the health and safety of our students, staff, and visitors.  Athletic events and contests will remain canceled until next week.

We are currently planning to reopen on Monday, October 16, with strict guidelines limiting outside activities. Campuses will be checked over the weekend, and we will send district staff to schools for extra support Monday.  We will continue to monitor air quality and health advisories and warnings from these agencies and update you as conditions change.

One of the main topics Simone will be discussing is relational aggression, commonly known as "girl drama," and how important it is for us to be teaching young people assertive communication and healthy problem-solving.

CSF (California Scholarship Federation) applications for fall semester are now being accepted.

Applications must be turned in to the College Park Treasurer's office and accompanied by a $5 membership fee and a copy of your June 2017 report card/grades. (First-semester freshmen who were members of CJSF at their middle schools are honorary members and do not need to pay dues.)

No applications for fall semester will be accepted after Fri., Sept. 29.

The PSAT will be on sale in the school store from September 11-29 for $25.

 

The test date for the PSAT this year is Sat., Oct. 14.

 

The PSAT is an excellent opportunity for juniors to practice their standardized testing skills for the SAT etc. In addition, students who perform well are nominated for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Award. 

Colleges and universities will not see a student's PSAT score when applying to college.

If you need help filling out FAFSA or Dream Act this is the event for you! (FAFSA or Dream Act are essential forms that your family needs to fill out to obtain financial aid from colleges, including merit-based aid).

On Thurs., Oct. 12 at Ygnacio Valley High School from 6:30-9:00pm, Cash for College will do a presentation and then provide financial aid experts to help you and your student fill out FAFSA or Dream Act forms line by line.

Ms. Lowe will be there to assist. There will be Spanish translators to support families as well.

  • Parent's bank account statements
  • Parent's 2016 income tax paperwork

"Within Reach" is the theme for the PTSA's Reflections Art program. This is an art contest put on by the California State PTA and has been encouraging young artists since 1969.

All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:

The PVSA is a national award that recognizes, celebrates and inspires volunteerism, service and citizenship in the community. The award is available to all K-12 students in Pleasant Hill through the Education Commission. 

The City of Pleasant Hill awards those who have the completed the PVSA's required number of hours of service during the 12 month time period for September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2017. Awards will be presented in late fall. Register now and log your hours for the past year. It's not too late!

Hello Falcon Community,

The School Site Council is a group of teachers, parents, classified employees, and students that works with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets. The members of the Site Council are elected by their peers. For example, parents elect the parent representatives and teachers elect teachers.

The exact duties of School Site Councils vary from state to state and even between districts in the same state, but Site Councils generally either make decisions or advise the principal on the school budget and the academic or school improvement plan. In addition to academic planning, many Site Councils are also responsible for making decisions about parent engagement, safety and discipline, for examples.
 
Over the course of a year, a typical Council might consider the goals of the school or district and then work with the principal to evaluate the school's progress toward those goals. In this evaluation, the Council might consider school test scores, attendance and discipline records, parent surveys and input from students.

After looking at the big picture of the school's progress, the Council and the principal create a plan for improvement. This plan might involve a new academic program, staff member or parent outreach strategy. For example, one Council might use funds to develop a new math program, while another might decide to hire a reading specialist. Another Council might decide that hiring an additional teacher to reduce class sizes in a particular grade or a parent liaison to get more parents involved would be the best use of its money. Because school budgets are limited and many funds can only be spent in certain ways, there are always tough decisions to make.

College Park's School Site Council meets the last Wednesday of each month from 3:00-4:30pm in the Career Center (located in room S-7). ONLINE DATA CONFIRMATION  ** NEW THIS YEAR TO COLLEGE PARK**

 

Online Data Confirmation is a feature of Aeries that allows parents to confirm and update student demographics, contacts, medical conditions, and authorization information through their HomeLink Parent Portal account.  This process handles the normal “Summer Re-Registration” of students where parents are normally required to fill out fresh emergency cards, sign various documents, and establish authorizations.

 

When parents log into the Aeries Parent Portal, Data Confirmation will display in the Student Info Tab dropdown.

 

A Yellow message will also display to the parent on their home page if they have not completed the data confirmation process.

 

If you do not have access to a Parent Portal account, please contact Stacy Boschetti in Attendance @ (925) 682-7670, ext. 3213 or via email at boschettis@mdusd.org to get your verification codes. Attendance will open on August 1st.

Pay to Play - Sports Physicals Event at Muir Orthopedic on July 29th

 

The 5th Annual Pass to Play event will be hosted by Muir Orthopaedic Specialists on Sat July 29th from 9:00-3:00 at 2625 Shadelands Dr. in Walnut Creek. The event will consist of an orthopedic, neurocognitive and cardiac pre participation screen. The cardiac portion will have an EKG, review of personal and family history with a physician and an echocardiogram if needed all on the same day. This enables the physicians to rule out any abnormalities which may not be seen from routine exams.

 

Athletes can sign up for one or all aspects for the same price of $30. All proceeds will be donated back to the athlete's Athletic Department. Over the past few years we have donated over $14,000 back to local schools. Register for the event by clicking here..

 

As of July 17th only 11 College Park Athletes have signed up for this event. This is an inexpensive and easy way to get your sports physical that is required for all sports.Register today.

There is one final need for volunteers. This Sat., June 10, from 9:00am-2:00pm, we need people to come to the Concord Centre to help take down the decorations. If you are available for any period of time during those hours, please join us.  

We need some strong people who can help lift heavy items and put them back in the shed. Someone with a truck would be helpful as well.

Dear Class of 2017 Falcon Students and Families,
  • Graduation ceremonies will be held at the Diablo Valley College Viking Field (football stadium) on Tues., June 6 at 7:00pm.
  • Graduation practice will take place at DVC at 10:00am on Tues., June 6.
  • All graduates are required to attend practice in order to participate in the commencement exercise.
  • Immediately following graduation practice, eight (8) tickets will be issued to each senior for guests to attend graduation. Seniors will pick up tickets in the DVC Viking Gymnasium.

This message contains several important pieces of information regarding next week’s festivities. Please read closely to ensure the smoothest experience possible next week.

 

Graduation

  • Gates open at 6 pm. There will be two points of entry: one on the home seating side (closest to parking lot), another at the end of the field by the visitor's side closest to the main campus entrance of DVC.
  • Parents should park in the following Lots depending on which side their student is seated:
    • Home Side Park in Lots 1, 2, or 3
    • Visitor Side Park in Lots 8 or 9
    • ADA access on Home Side Lot 1 (Handicap Placard Required)
  • Parents will meet graduates in the parking lot after the ceremony. Parents will not be allowed on field or in gym for diploma pickup
  • No signs, banners, balloons, shade umbrellas, or large backpacks will be allowed in Viking Stadium
  • Students are not to wear high heels during the ceremony. Wedges may be worn.

Grad Nite

Parents volunteers are still needed for Grad Nite after the graduation ceremony. If you are interested and available, please visit www.cpgradnite.com and follow the link for volunteers.

The City of Concord will televise high school graduations live from the Concord Pavilion again this year on Concord Cable TV.

Clayton Valley Charter High School (June 1, 6 p.m.), Necessary Small Schools (June 4, 11 a.m.), Mt. Diablo High School (June 4, 4 p.m.), Northgate High School (June 8, 7 p.m.) and Olympic High School (June 9, 7 p.m.) graduations at the Pavilion will be broadcast live and rebroadcast on weekends and at other times throughout the month.

 

Due to a scheduling conflict at the Concord Pavilion, Ygnacio Valley High School (June 5), College Park High School (June 6) and Concord High School (June 7) graduations have been moved to Diablo Valley College. These graduations will be filmed and broadcast starting on June 28.

 

Concord Cable TV can be found by Concord subscribers of Comcast on channel 28, Astound on channel 29, and AT&T U-Verse on channel 99. The Pavilion graduations will also be streamed live on the City’s website at www.cityofconcord.org. Family and friends are invited to send a note to a special graduating senior to receive on graduation night via the Grad Nite Post Office. This is an easy way to send a congratulatory message, "thinking of you," favorite quotation or wise words for the graduate. Anyone can send a message, but this is perfect for out of town family members who won't be able to make graduation! Please note: Student must be attending Grad Nite in order to receive message

Please include:
* Student's first and last name in the subject line of email
* The sender's name at the end (so student knows who is sending the message)

It's time to prepare the 2017 Senior Memory Boards for Grad Nite. Here's how it works:
  • Pick up a Grad Nite Memory Board--and instructions--from the Main Office (Student Services North) through Wed., May 31.  Only one board per Senior.  
  • Decorate any way you would like--pictures, team logos etc.
  • Take the completed Memory Board to the FedEx Office at 622 Contra Costa Blvd, Pleasant Hill, to have it laminated no later than Thurs., June 1
The Grad Nite team will pick up your Memory Boards from FedEx Office and ensure they are hung with pride at Grad Night on Tues., June 6.  Seniors will be given Memory Boards to take home from Grad Nite.

Baked goods needed for Grad Nite! We are looking for people who can either bake or buy some desserts and/or breakfast items for Grad Nite! As many cookies, cupcakes, brownies, bagels, breakfast or dessert muffins as you can donate to us would be great!

We will need these dropped off all weekend from Fri., June 2-Mon., June 5 at 9:00pm. Drop off is at Leandra Solomon's house at 105 Byron Ct, Pleasant Hill. There will be a table out on her porch so you can walk and drop!

Grad Nite Prize committee needs your donations 

The Grad Nite Prize Committee is asking for donations of gift cards and actual items for the prize booth ... an ongoing raffle during Grad Nite that is lots of fun for the graduating seniors!

 

Gift card ideas: gas, iTunes, iApps, Target, The Habit, Chipotle, Starbucks, Panda Express, Cold Stone, Cream, movie tickets, BART tickets, any of those gift cards sold at Costco, etc.

Anything of value to a young adult either going off to college, starting a career, or for just plain fun! Like iPhone chargers or speakers, alarm  clocks, sports tickets, etc.

Permission slips required for attendance at Grad Nite

All seniors attending Grad Nite need to turn in permission slips before the event! Please complete them and turn them in to Student Services North in the basket on the counter marked "Grad Nite Permission Slips." You can also turn them in to Ms. Keating's office.

There are two sides to complete--one side for College Park and the other is for City of Concord. Both MUST be filled out completely. Click here to download the permission slip in English. Click here to download the permission slip in Spanish.

There is also a permission slip to leave early.
If you fill this out, you are letting the committee know that your student has your permission to leave Grad Nite earlier than 4:30am. Do you have an eye for decorating or are you a night owl?  Then we especially need your help for Grad Nite.  

More than 50 volunteers are still needed to help decorate the weekend before Grad Nite ... pick your hours, we'll be there all day, every day.  

We also still need 55 volunteers for the event itself, especially the post midnight shifts. Help feed the graduates and keep them safe and entertained during the wee hours of the morning.  Grab your spouse or a group of friends ... plan a breakfast gathering afterwards ... whatever it takes.

We are hosting a brief informational meeting for any boys entering College Park this fall (all grade levels), who may be interested in exploring the water polo program. 

Prior experience and knowledge of the game is great, but not required. Parents and students are invited to meet our coaches, team parents, and returning players on the pool deck at College Park on Thurs., June 1 at 7:00pm. (The pool is located at the back right-hand side of the campus.) 

We will provide general information about the overall program, and details regarding the summer opportunities for training before the season kicks off on August 14. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in more info, please contact Coach John DeLuca.

CAASPP TESTS begin Monday, May 15th  - Friday May 26th.  It is important to maintain the level of success our students demonstrate on these state assessments.  College Park High School students have consistently out performed local and state levels.  It is important to remember the following: 

 

1.  Be present and on time during the dates your student will be testing. 

2.  Cell Phones are to be "Powered OFF"  during the testing session.

3.  Review the PRACTICE LINK above prior to Monday, May 15.  

 

Students in Grade 11 will take the English Language Arts and Math

Students in Grade 10 will take the Pilot C.A.S.T. [California Science Test]

                As we all know life brings change.  This holds true with our coaching staff.  Long time basketball coach Troy Faulk announced today that he will be stepping down effective immediately.  Coach Faulk shared with the team today at lunch his difficult decision, saying goodbye to a program he has been dedicated to for nine years.  He has always expected his student-athletes to be all in, and has the same expectation for himself.  His new job and family commitments have led him to take some time away from the team and the sport he loves.

                Coach Faulk has coached at College Park since2008, serving as a varsity assistant.  He was on staff for three DVAL championships, and the Nor Cal /State Finals run in 2013.  In 2015 Coach Faulk took over the head job, leading to team to a DVAL championship season, NCS birth and posting a 22-7 record.  During Coach Faulk’s three years as the head coach, they posted a 49-33 overall record, won two DVAL championships, and advanced to NCS each season.

                One of Coach Faulk’s key contributions during his tenure has been the College Park team room in the small gym.  The space has lockers, record boards, team benches, and a flat screen tv for the team to take advantage of.  This room is not only used by the basketball programs but our volleyball teams as well.  Troy made it a priority to push this project to completion with paperwork and fundraising.

                Coach Faulk’s lasting contribution will always be the young men he has mentored during his time here at CP.  He as always asked his players for their best and they have responded in kind.  His professionalism, attention to detail, and passion for the game will be missed.  There were handshakes and a more than a few teary eyes today when Troy spoke to the team. 

Thank you Coach Faulk for your dedication and service here at College Park.  You will be missed.

                We would at the same time like to welcome our new girls’ volleyball coach, Melissa Ralls.  Coach Ralls played for two years at Merced College as a Libero.  She brings seven years of coaching experience to College Park, having coached at the Middle School, High School and club levels.  Coach Ralls currently coaches at Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy in the offseason.  She has met with the team and will be announcing her staff and plans for team workouts shortly.  Coach Ralls fills the position previously held by Kent Perkins who stepped down for family and health reasons.

We desperately need someone to fill the President of the PTSA position. We also need to fill the position of Auditor on next year's PTSA Executive Board. 

In addition to that we need a Volunteer Coordinator, a person to run All In One Day, someone to be in charge of the organic gardens, and an Academic Boosters chair.  

If you'd like to do our community the honor of serving in one of these positions or know of a CPHS parent (or guardian) who would like to do so, please contact Cris Tina Spillett.  Please help us keep the PTSA strong so we can support our school with the extras that make CPHS a wonderful school community
