SAT/ACT

SAT

What is the SAT?

It's a standardized test that students can take before applying to colleges. The exam tests students on math, reading, and writing content by having students analyze and evaluate problems.

A student can score between 400-1600; the higher the score a student achieves, the better their chances are for college admission.

The test is offered through an organization called the CollegeBoard, which also offers other standardized exams such as the PSAT/NMSQT and AP exams. A student must register on the CollegeBoard's website to take the test.

ACT

What is the ACT?

It's a standardized test that students can take before applying to colleges. The exam tests students on math, reading, writing, and a bit of science content by having students analyze and evaluate problems.

A student can score between 1-36; the higher the score a student achieves, the better their chances are for college admission.

The test is offered through the ACT company, and a student must register through their website to take the exam.

SAT Subject Tests

What are the SAT subject tests?

For competitive colleges (colleges that accept a low percentage of students), often it is recommended that a student take two or sometimes three subject tests.

Whereas the SAT is very broad, SAT subject tests focus on one particular subject such as chemistry, Spanish, US history, etc. The test is only an hour long, and a student can take multiple subject tests on one day.

For a student to do well on the test, it is recommended that student is enrolled in a course on that subject and takes the exam in the spring or summer, in order to have covered most of the content on the test.
